So on 3 June, they decreed it was the feast day of Bellona – goddess of war, sadly. The name Bellona comes from the Latin word for war bellum. Bellona was the original god of war – but later Mars took over the role.
However, Mars did have a consort, Nerio, goddess of war and valor. However, it turns out that Nerio is associated with another goddess, Bellona, Goddess of war. So that got me thinking, how many war gods did Rome have?
