Les Diaboliques (1955) Director, Henri-Georges Clouzot, was seen as a rival to Alfred Hitchcock, in creating the most disturbing thrillers of the time. Apparently, after watching Les Diaboliques, Hitchcock bought the rights to the same author's Vertigo, in a bid to better Clouzot.
