The conflict between the British and French over territorial claims in the area was settled in 1758 when General John Forbes and his British and colonial army expelled the French from Fort Duquesne (built 1754).

The British began building a fort in 1754 but the French assumed control of the region before it was finished and built Fort Duquesne.
