Countess Auguste von Harrach zu Rohrau und Thannhausen, Princess of Liegnitz (30 August 1800 – 5 June 1873), was the second wife of King Frederick William III of Prussia.
Dating from c.1828, the miniature depicts Augusta, daughter of Count Ferdinand von Harrach and his first wife, Johanna von Rayski, several years after her morganatic marriage, in 1824, to Frederick William III, King of Prussia.
After the daughter moved out, the palace became the residence of Auguste von Harrach, named Princess von Liegnitz (1800–1873), whom Frederick William III had secretly wedded in 1824, thirteen years after Luise’s death.
Of particular interest is the mausoleum in the northwestern palace garden that King Frederick William III had built in the shape of an ancient temple for his wife Luise, who died young. It contains Christian Daniel Rauch’s tomb monument for the queen – a masterwork of 19th century German sculpture.
