He was the eldest son of the reigning Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Frederick Francis IV , and his wife Princess Alexandra of Hanover , a daughter of the Crown Prince of Hanover .

He married Richardis of Schwerin, daughter of count Otto of Schwerin; she died in 1377 and is today buried in Stockholm.
