The set was originally made for the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte, but was passed down through generations of monarchs before reaching Queen Ingrid of Denmark, who bequeathed them to King Frederik, her grandson.

Fittingly, the set’s first owner was Désirée Clary, who became Queen of Sweden through her marriage to Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, later King Carl XIV Johan. The suite of jewels was originally made for the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte in Paris in 1804.

He married Désirée Clary in August 1798, the daughter of a Marseilles merchant, and once engaged to Napoleon, and Joseph Bonaparte's sister-in-law. In November of the same year he was made commander of the army of observation on the upper Rhine.

Elle rentre tout de même en Suède lorsque son fils, le futur Oscar 1er, épouse la princesse Joséphine de Leuchtenberg, petite-fille de l’impératrice Joséphine. À la mort de Désirée en 1860, sa collection de bijoux revient à sa belle-fille Joséphine.
