3 giorni fa · In the early 16th century the chantry-priest of Frampton taught the children, and a tenement that had belonged to the chantry was still called the school-house in 1570. Two schoolmasters living in Frampton in 1798 presumably taught private schools: there were boarding schools in the village in 1819 and until 1897.
2 giorni fa · The almshouse school of Ewelme and the chantry school at Chipping Norton seem to have been alone in preserving a continuous existence. Banbury, Burford, Thame, and Henley schools were refounded before 1604, but Witney not until 1664.

Simon Forman, the astrologer, was a schoolmaster in the town in 1577, and William Lockier and Giles Daniell taught there in the earlier 17th century. William Gough kept a school in the town during the Interregnum.
4 giorni fa · In 1540 the chapel became the home of the Royal Latin School. It was a school from 1552 until 1907. By 1781 it was also a Sunday School, said to be only the second such school in the country. The chapel was twice restored by public subscription, in 1857 and again, under the direction of Sir George Gilbert Scott, R.A. in the 1870s.
