He was a prominent Newtonian follower whose work helped to establish the validity of the principles and results that Sir Iaac Newton had outlined in the Principia of 1687.

Instead of a pure inverse-square law, Clairaut proposed adding a small term, proportional to the inverse fourth power of the distance, in order to get the motion of the Moon’s perigee to come out correctly.
