It was Beethoven’s grandfather who had first settled in Bonn when he became a singer in the choir of the archbishop-elector of Cologne; he eventually rose to become Kappellmeister.

Ludwigs opa, Lodewijk van Beethoven (1712-1773), was afkomstig uit Mechelen en verhuisde in maart 1773 naar Bonn om daar hofzanger te worden. Ludwig had een muzikale, niet altijd makkelijke jeugd.
