9 mag 2024 · The beginnings of floriography are often attributed to a woman named Lady Mary Wortley Montagu in the early 1700s. Lady Montagu’s husband was a British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. As a result, Montagu lived in Constantinople from 1716-1718.

In 1718 Wortley Montague had her son inoculated and when in 1721 a smallpox epidemic struck England, she had her daughter inoculated.
