I'm on a journey to read a biography of every president in order. I recently finished Millard Fillmore by Robert J. Rayback. I found this a surprisingly interesting book. Fillmore seemed to be genuinely trying to keep the peace as the country was starting to tear itself apart.

Douglas led the passage of the Compromise of 1850, which helped to defuse sectional tensions in the aftermath of the Mexican–American War for a time.
