William of Celje (German: Wilhelm von Cilli, Slovene: Viljem Celjski; c. 1361 – 19 August 1392), also William of Cilli, Count of Celje, was a Styrian nobleman who was married to Anna of Poland, daughter of the Polish king Casimir the Great.
The Counts of Celje (Slovene: Celjski grofje) or the Counts of Cilli (German: Grafen von Cilli; Hungarian: cillei grófok) were the most influential late medieval noble dynasty on the territory of present-day Slovenia.
Life. William was the only child of Ulrich I, Count of Celje and Adelaide of Ortenburg. The date of his birth is unknown, but was probably in the early 1360s. After his father's death in 1368, William was raised by his uncle Hermann I of Celje. Hermann ruled in his nephew's name, and upon William's coming of age, they ruled jointly.
In 1380 Anna of Poland married to William, Count of Celje (1361–1392). They had a single surviving child: Anna of Celje (1386–1416), married to Jogaila Grand Duke of Lithuania, named Wladyslaw II as king of Poland. Hedwig Jagiellon, died 23 years old. The Counts of Cilli [1] or Celje represent the most important medieval aristocratic and ruling house with roots and territory in present-day Slovenia. When the house died out its head held the rank of prince of the Holy Roman Empire and many other titles in territories of present-day Central Europe.
