While a captain in the Coldstream Guards, he commanded a small detachment of Guards to act in support of the police with the arrest of the Cato Street conspirators in 1820.

FitzClarence's father, as admiral of the fleet, commanded the escort with Impregnable as his flagship. The process was completed on 6 June. While Clarence stayed in Impregnable to organise the return of Alexander and Frederick to France, FitzClarence transferred to serve on board the 50-gun fourth rate HMS Newcastle on 15 June.

Frederick FitzClarence was the second (illegitimate) son of King William IV and his mistress Dorothea Jordan. He was born 9 December 1799 and died on 30 October 1854. Between 1847 and 1851 he was Lieutenant-Governor of Portsmouth.
