He is well known for his paintings and drawings of alpine scenery, and as a mountaineer made 300 major ascents including no fewer than 27 first ascents.

Born in 1849 to an insurance agent in the English town of Stoke Newington, Compton produced nature studies from the age of fourteen onwards, and attended London’s Royal Academy of Art, among others.
