A version by Buddy Holly, quickly released by Brunswick (as Coral Records 9-62006), competed in the UK (Coral Q 72333) with Darin's single (London 45-HL-E.8679, crediting the Rinky-Dinks); future releases were issued under Darin's name.
With the success of "Splish Splash" the single was re-released by Atco Records as "Early in the Morning" with the band renamed as The Rinky Dinks. It charted, and made it to number 24 in the United States. In 1959, Darin recorded the self-penned "Dream Lover", a ballad that became a multi-million seller.

For its part, Etymology Online offers this somewhat lengthier discussion of the term: rinky-dink (adj.) 1913 (from 1912 as a noun), said to be carnival slang and imitative of the sound of banjo music at parades [Barnhart]; compare ricky-tick "old-fashioned jazz" (1938).
