Irving Milfred Mole (March 11, 1898 – April 29, 1961) known professionally as Miff Mole, was an American jazz trombonist and band leader. He is generally considered one of the greatest jazz trombonists and credited with creating "the first distinctive and influential solo jazz trombone style."
21 feb 2020 · When Jack Teagarden arrived in New York in 1928, he replaced Mole as the role model for trombonists, with a more legato, blues-oriented approach. Having started working for radio in 1927 (at WOR), Mole changed his focus to working with NBC (1929–38).
The Molers 1928 recording of “ Crazy Rhythm ” is always a “fooler” for noticers who try to figure out if it’s a valve trombone or something – the mellophone sounds kind of like a low cornet with bad head cold.

Mole is arguably the pioneer of the solo jazz trombone style. Born in New York in 1898, Mole began on the piano and switched to trombone at age 15. A member of the Original Memphis Five (founded in 1917 by pianist Phil Napoleon), Mole went on to form Miff Mole and His Little Molers with cornetist Red Nichols.
