È il sesto album registrato dal gruppo ed il primo registrato a San Francisco, presso il Wally Heider's. Tra i musicisti partecipanti, oltre al gruppo, spiccano Jerry Garcia, l'esperto pianista Nicky Hopkins, il futuro batterista del gruppo Joey Covington alle percussioni in due brani, David Crosby e Stephen Stills.
Volunteers was the group's first album recorded entirely in San Francisco, at Wally Heider's state-of-the-art 16-track studio. Guest musicians included Jerry Garcia on pedal steel guitar, veteran session pianist Nicky Hopkins, future Airplane drummer Joey Covington on percussion, David Crosby and Stephen Stills.
The next track "Wooden Ships" is one of the best songs of the 60s, co-written by Stephen Stills, David Crosby, and Kantner. The Airplane version is far more powerful and dramatic than the earlier CSN version, which is more dreamy and laid back.
