On March 8th, 2022, during the first show of the Never Find My Place Tour, Poppy debuted the then-unreleased song "Stagger". She performed another unreleased song titled "FYB" at the Reading Festival on August 27th, 2022. This coincided with the announcement of a four-track EP titled Stagger, which Poppy confirmed in an interview with Dork along with a partial release date of October 2022. In the interview, she revealed that the EP would contain "a couple of fun songs, and one slower song", and promised "more guitars".
On September 22nd, 2022, Poppy revealed the EP's full release date of October 14th, 2022 on social media.
In an October 2022 interview with Kerrang!, Poppy revealed the EP's full tracklist. She also explained the meaning behind its title:
Poppy wrote the EP over a three-week period in December 2021. Many of the lyrics were words and phrases directly lifted from her journal entries.
Poppy began her Never Find My Place Tour in March 2022, originally in promotion of her fourth studio album Flux. The second leg of the tour, the Spirits On Fire Tour, took place in North America between October 2nd, 2022 and November 19th, 2022, and was in promotion of both Flux and Stagger. "FYB" was released to digital retailers through Republic Records and Lava Records on September 23rd, 2022, and served as the first single to the EP. Poppy co-wrote the song with Simon Wilcox and Ted Gowans, and it was produced by Gowans and Mike Elizondo.
•This is the only release in the Poppy discography to have an official clean version released.
•This is the fourth physical Poppy release to be limited to vinyl records, the others being I C U (Music to Read To), Music to Scream To and A Very Poppy Christmas.
•Additionally, the Stagger vinyl records were only made available through a third party, that being Revolver Magazine and Alternative Press Magazine.
•With all variants included, pressings of the vinyl are limited to 1,500 units.
