David Johansen and the Harry Smiths is a 2000 album that David Johansen released with the "Harry Smiths". Johansen created the album following a folk scene that was taking place in the late 1990s in New York City clubs.
On David Johansen and the Harry Smiths, David and his first-rate band summon the spirit of the blues through American musicologist/folklorist Harry Smith. Featuring gripping performances of songs by Muddy Waters, Mississippi John Hurt and Bob Dylan.
Johansen then turned to blues with his group, The Harry Smiths. The group was named as a tribute to Harry Everett Smith, who compiled the Anthology of American Folk Music, several songs of which were covered by the band. Johansen's second album with the Harry Smiths is titled Shaker.

David Johansen and the Harry Smiths' Shaker is more than just a tribute to great blues legends and the infamous anthologist of folk music.
Shaker is the second and final album David Johansen recorded with the Harry Smiths. The album was released in 2002 by Chesky Records. The Harry Smiths personnel is the same as the band on the debut album, except for the drummer Keith Carlock, who replaced Joey Baron.
