A three-time Grammy Award winner and fifteen-time nominee, [1] Vai started his music career in 1978 at the age of eighteen as a transcriptionist for Frank Zappa, [2] and played in Zappa's band from 1980 to 1983. [1]
Released: 1981. You Are What You Is is a 1981 double album by American musician Frank Zappa. His 34th album, it consists of three musical suites which encompass pop, doo-wop, jazz, hard rock, reggae, soul, blues, new wave and country.
Much cleaner sounding than the previous two, this album has an equal balance of vocal and instrumental offerings. There's even a couple examples of what Frank called "meltdown", a sort-of-twisted-half-talking-half-singing mixture that is sure to drive anyone looking for a nice little melody to suicide.
In Guitar player, August 2006, Steve Vai comments about soloing with Frank Zappa during "Stevie's spanking": "When you are improvising with another musician, you get to enter a private place with that person and share an intimacy that you don't have in any other kind of relationship.
NOTES: "You Are What You Is" This was the first real studio album on which I ever played. I remember going up to Frank's house one night and staying for nine days. When you worked with Frank in the studio, you could just record and record until you couldn't stand it anymore.
