Eliza Poe (née Elizabeth Arnold; formerly Hopkins; 1787 – December 8, 1811) was an English actress and the mother of the American author Edgar Allan Poe.

Poe, an avid theatregoer was from Baltimore, and the son of Irish-born Revolutionary War figure, Major David Poe, or “General Poe,” and his wife, Elizabeth Carnes Poe. David left his family while studying law and sought an acting career, joining the Charleston Theatre company in December 1803.
Eliza, now 22, played New York for nine month, until the closing of the season in July. Some benefit performances were thrown for the lonely Eliza and the help was very much needed especially since she gave birth to a girl, Rosalie, in December 1810.

From the age of 9 until her death at 24, Elizabeth made her living as an actress in theaters from Boston to Charleston.
