The Buggles, which formed in 1977, first consisted of Trevor Horn, Geoff Downes and Bruce Woolley. They recorded the first demo of "Video Killed the Radio Star" on a Revox A77 tape recorder, one afternoon in 1978, in Downes' flat located above a monumental stonemason's in Wimbledon Park, London.

The second Buggles single was " Living In The Plastic Age ," which spelled out the concept of an artificial existence. Like "Video Killed The Radio Star," it came with a bonkers video directed by Russell Mulcahy, but MTV ignored it, so few Americans have heard it. The song reached #16 in the UK.
In February 2017, Bruce Woolley and his band the Radio Science Orchestra, released a new, dark ambient version of "Video Killed the Radio Star" with singer Polly Scattergood on vocals. The single was released on Gramophone Records, along with a music video featuring musician and producer Thomas Dolby and Wolfgang Wild of Retronaut fame.

Background. Geoff Downes formed the Buggles in 1977 in Wimbledon, South West London with Trevor Horn and Bruce Woolley. [8] . The trio had recorded rough demos of early compositions such as "Video Killed the Radio Star", "Clean, Clean" and "On TV", a track later included on their second album, Adventures in Modern Recording. [8] .
