Millar recruited Martha Johnson to play keyboards; Johnson brought in a friend from high school, Carl Finkle, to play bass; and Gane's brother Tim signed on as the drummer. With Millar and Mark Gane as guitarists, and Johnson as lead vocalist, this is the line up that debuted at an Ontario College of Art Hallowe'en party in October 1977.

25 ott 2020 · Approached by fellow student David Millar (guitar) who was interested in starting a band, Mark (guitar) recruited his brother Tim (drums) while David asked friend Martha Johnson (vocals) to be the singer, and she in turn brought on Carl Finkle (bass).

Johnson joined David Millar, Mark and Tim Gane, and Carl Finkle to form the band Martha and the Muffins in 1977. The band, later known as M + M, released an international hit single with "Echo Beach", with Johnson as lead singer.
Martha Ladly verließ die Band, Tim Gane kehrte als Schlagzeuger zurück. 1981 wurde Carl Finkle von Jocelyne Lanois, der Schwester des Musikproduzenten Daniel Lanois ersetzt. Daniel Lanois produzierte auch das neue Album This is the Ice Age.
