In 1989, O'Connor provided guest vocals on The The album Mind Bomb, on the duet "Kingdom of Rain". That same year, she made another foray into cinema, starring in and writing the music for the Northern Irish film Hush-a-Bye-Baby .

Nata a Dublino da famiglia numerosa (suo fratello Joseph O'Connor è uno scrittore di successo), Sinéad impara a suonare la chitarra e inizia a comporre canzoni mentre ancora frequenta la scuola. All'età di 14 anni si unisce al gruppo irlandese In Tua Nua col quale esordisce come autrice nel brano Take My Hand che diventa un successo nel 1984 e in seguito collabora con il gruppo dei Ton Ton Macoute.Questa collaborazione le vale un contratto con l'etichetta indipendente Ensign Records.
Il successo
Nel 1985 Sinéad si trasferisce a Londra per lavorare al suo primo album in studio da solista The Lion and the Cobra, da lei stessa scritto e prodotto, che viene pubblicato nel 1987. L'album, un immediato successo di pubblico e critica, ospita anche una giovane Enya che nel brano Never Get Old recita in gaelico alcuni passi della Bibbia. Le polemiche, la crisi personale e il ritorno
Nel 1992, dopo che Sinéad ebbe manifestato l'intenzione di non esibirsi in New Jersey qualora fosse stato eseguito l'inno nazionale degli Stati Uniti d'America, Frank Sinatra dichiarò che l'avrebbe volentieri «presa a calci nel sedere».
