Thomas Moran was the first American painter to capture the grandeur of Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. Born in England, he immigrated to America as a child and apprenticed to an engraver in Philadelphia.

Biography. Thomas Moran was born 12 February 1837 in Bolton, England, not far from Manchester, the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. Several generations of the Moran family had worked as handloom weavers in Bolton until the introduction of power looms radically changed the industry.
