Winans è nata a Detroit nello stato del Michigan, l'8 ottobre 1964, da Delores e David Winans. La famiglia, composta da altri nove fratelli, professa il pentecostalismonella Church Of God In Christ, in cui Winans e scopre la musica gospel.
