Wayland Seminary was the Washington, D.C., school of the National Theological Institute. [1] The institute was established beginning in 1865 by the American Baptist Home Mission Society (ABHMS).
The school became known as Wayland Seminary; and it acquired a sterling reputation under the direction of its president, Dr. George Mellen Prentiss King. Dr. King administered Wayland for thirty years (1867-97) and stayed on as a professor for twenty additional years at both Wayland and at Virginia Union University.

Dr. Wayland also studied medicine in New York City, but in 1816 entered Andover Theological Seminary, where he was greatly influenced by Moses Stuart.

3 mag 2024 · He graduated in 1875, returned to Malden to teach for three years, spent the winter of 1878–1879 studying at the Wayland Seminary in Washington, D.C., then returned to Hampton Institute in 1879 to work for two years as a night-school teacher and a supervisor of the Kiowa and Cheyenne students recently accepted at the school.
