Impulsive, avaricious, and grandiloquent, this farmer, Indian fighter, speculator, politician, filibusterer, Revolutionary soldier, and pioneer on six frontiers, was a unique embodiment of much of the spirit of the Old West in the early days of the republic.
Ezekiel Polk's early years were spent following the advancing frontier. His Scotch-Irish father had settled in Maryland in the I720's, and, some time before i740, had followed the lure of land to the Cumberland valley of Pennsylvania. It was here, on December 7, I747, that Ezekiel was born, the next youngest of five boys and three girls.
