Deve il suo nome al padrino di battesimo Eugenio di Savoia. Entrò nell'esercito e raggiunse nell'esercito reale danese il grado di tenente-generale della fanteria. Nel paese natale divenne ricoprì il ruolo di comandante del Corpo di Artiglieria. Fondò nel 1765 la fabbrica di porcellana Veilsdorf.
Elisabetta Albertina era figlia del Duca Ernesto Federico I di Sassonia-Hildburghausen (1681–1724) e di sua moglie Sofia Albertina (1683–1742), figlia del conte Giorgio Luigi I di Erbach-Erbach.
