The Cowardly Lion of Oz ( 1923) is the seventeenth in the series of Oz books created by L. Frank Baum and his successors, and the third written by Ruth Plumly Thompson. [1] . It was illustrated by John R. Neill . Plot. The story opens with Mustafa of Mudge, a turbaned desert monarch with blue whiskers, who collects lions.
This is a close match to my favorite Oz book, as written by Ruth Thompson. I really loved The Royal Book of Oz, and I loved Cowardly Lion of Oz nearly as much. The characters I enjoyed the most in this story is the orphan Bob. For the first time, Thompson is tackling a serious issue for children, and it is the fact that some children are orphans.
