Lee Hoi-chuen was born in Jun'an, Guangdong, China on 4 February 1901. He moved to Hong Kong and became a Cantonese opera actor. There, he met and married Grace Ho (1907–1996) who was of half-Cantonese and half-English descent and a daughter of Ho Kom-tong. They had two daughters, Phoebe and Agnes, and three sons, Peter, Bruce and Robert .

Hoi Chuen Lee began his own family after marrying the gorgeous Grace Lee Ho and thereafter moved to Hong Kong. They had their first son on 23rd October, 1939 and named him Peter Jung Sum Lee. The following year they travelled to San Francisco on a US tour for a Cantonese Opera Company.

Lee Hoi-chuen had been touring the United States for many years and performing in numerous Chinese communities there. Although many of his peers decided to stay in the US, Lee Hoi-chuen returned to Hong Kong after Bruce's birth. Within months, Hong Kong was invaded and the Lees lived for three years and eight months under Japanese occupation.
