Tina Turner nacque a Brownsville, nello stato del Tennessee, da Floyd Richard Bullock e Zelma Priscilla Currie. All'età di dieci anni cantava già nel coro della chiesa della sua città, dove il padre Richard era pastore. Nel 1975 apparve nell'iconico ruolo dell'Acid Queen, una prostituta tossicodipendente in Tommy, versione cinematografica del celebre musical degli Who diretto da Ken Russell. In questo periodo, grazie al produttore e talent scout John S. Carter, che riuscì a vincere l'opposizione della Capitol Records a ingaggiare la Turner, e anche all'insistenza di David Bowie, suo amico ed estimatore, ottenne un contratto discografico per tre album.
