Of course, ‘have’ means something different in the phrase ‘you cannot have your cake and eat it’: it means ‘keep’. This only came home to me when I read an obscure poem by the Romantic poet John Keats, ‘On Fame (II)’, which quoted the proverb in a slightly reordered way which made more logical sense:
To have or do two things that one desires that are normally contradictory or impossible to have or do simultaneously. Because "have" can also mean "eat," this expression may seem redundant. However, it is based on the meaning of "have" as "to possess," i.e., to maintain possession of one's cake while still eating it, an obvious impossibility.
20 ago 2021 · Meaning. I hear you, this proverb can be puzzling: if we get a cake we’re supposed to eat it, aren’t we? Or are we so masochist we just stare at it, drooling? What the saying means is that you can’t have things both ways.
26 set 2022 · What does “have your cake and eat it too” mean? Having your cake refers to keeping it with you. This means you want to preserve the cake for the future. But you also want to eat it. This is contradictory. The moment you eat your cake, you can’t have it because it is finished.
