Carmen Miranda "Carmen Miranda: The Brazilian Recordings" (Harlequin Records, 1993) Outstanding. A revelation for those who know Miranda only from her campy fruit-bowl-on-the-head Hollywood cameos, this disc highlights Miranda's early years in Brazil, where in the 1930s, she was a major samba star.
10 feb 2007 · This is an amazing collection of Carmen Miranda's best classic recordings, made in the 1930s, before she moved to the United States. This is possibly the finest "samba cancao" (song-samba) music ever made, one great, perky, super-fun song after another.

This includes a nice selection of Carmen Miranda's Brazilian RCA recordings, pre-Hollywood. The transfers sound pretty clean, considering that these were recorded from 1930-1935. The boxed set also includes a booklet in English and Portuguese.
Miranda's 1930 recording of "Taí (Pra Você Gostar de Mim)", written by Joubert de Carvalho, catapulted her to stardom in Brazil as the foremost interpreter of samba. During the 1930s, Miranda performed on Brazilian radio and appeared in five Brazilian chanchadas, films celebrating Brazilian music, dance and the country's carnival culture.
