Pressure Pain Threshold (PPT) uses a mechanical stimulus to identify the point at which a stimulus-induced sensation of pressure first transitions to one of pain. Often, this test is performed by applying pressure using an algometer to sites both near to and distant from the site where subjects experience pain.
Pressure threshold is the minimal pressure (force) which induces pain. The pressure threshold meter (PTM) is a force gauge with a rubber disc of 1 cm2 surface. The instrument has been proven to be useful in clinical practice for quantification of deep muscle tenderness.

In the investigation of pressure pain thresholds in each subject, the highest pressure pain threshold (3.6±1.8) was measured in the right extensor carpi radialis, and the lowest pressure pain threshold (4.9±1.9) was measured in the left extensor carpi radialis.
