Stan Kenton. Stanley Newcomb Kenton (December 15, 1911 – August 25, 1979) was an American popular music and jazz artist. As a pianist, composer, arranger and band leader, he led an innovative and influential jazz orchestra for almost four decades.

22 feb 2019 · In 1944 Dolly Mitchell left the band and Anita O'Day, widely known for her work with Gene Krupa, joined Stan along with a young male vocalist and arranger, Gene Howard. A considerable quantity of material was mailed or brought in to the Kenton organization.

This is a partial collection of the great work that Stan Kenton and Anita did circa 1944. In Anita’s Autobiography, “Hard Times High Times”, She reflects back quite a bit about working with Stan vs. Gene Krupa.
In 1944 she joined Stan Kenton’s band. She then re-joined Krupa in 1945, remaining there until 1946, when she began a solo career. In the mid-1950s she made a many notable albums for the Verve label , demonstrating the power of her vocals.
