Remains of Elmet is a collection of poems by Ted Hughes published in 1979. In this book Hughes has poetically covered the region of Elmet. The book contains black and white photographs by Fay Godwin, taken in the barren hill country of West Yorkshire, Hughes's birthplace.

Remains of Elmet is a most rewarding collection of poetry though not for reasons one may expect. Its sometimes jagged verse, occasionally bordering on a minimalism of sorts, may not please those more accustomed to Hughes's more popular poems of nature.

Elmet (Cymric: Elfed) was an independent Brittonic or Old British kingdom covering a region of what later became the West Riding of Yorkshire in the Early Middle Ages, between about the 5th century and early 7th century.
2 set 2016 · Among the most successful was Remains of Elmet (1979), by photographer Fay Godwin and poet Ted Hughes. Fifteen years later, Godwin and Hughes published the revised edition Elmet (1994), which incorporated more than a third new poems and photographs into an entirely new arrangement.
In Remains of Elmet, Hughes projects the history of Elmet beyond his own time. The old Calder Valley society was, as Hughes saw it, “virtually dead, and the population of the valleys and the hillsides, so rooted for so long, [was] changing rapidly” (ROE.Intro.).
