Particularly appreciated for its ductility, malleability and resistance to oxidation, nickel is best known for its use in stainless steels. This usage accounts for around 70% of global nickel demand. It is also employed in the manufacture of alloys (8%), in special steels (8%), in coatings (8%) and, increasingly, in electric batteries (5%).

Nickel is rather well distributed around the globe with land resources estimated at 300 million metric tons, of which 60% correspond to laterite deposits (primarily in South-East Asia) and 40% to sulfide deposits (South Africa, Canada, Russia). Mining production is dominated by South-East Asia
In 2020, global mined nickel production reached around 2.5 million metric tons, down by almost 8% compared to the previous year.
