Ha suonato sia chitarre da 6 corde che 12 corde sempre nella chitarra acustica, così come banjo a 5 corde. Baker ha suonato Piedmont blues per 90 anni, a partire dall'età di tre anni, quando, si racconta non riuscisse nemmeno a tenere la chitarra in modo corretto.

Etta started playing festivals and concerts and in 1991 released her first album, One Dime Blues. Etta went on to record three more albums; the last one, an all banjo instrumental recording, was released posthumously.
15 feb 2024 · Music Maker recorded the Etta Baker albums Railroad Bill (1999), Etta Baker with Taj Mahal (2004), Carolina Breakdown with Cora Phillips (2005), Banjo (2009), and a vinyl issue of Railroad Bill (2015).
Her grandfather was a banjo player; her father played banjo and fiddle as well as guitar; her mother, harmonica and Jew's harp. Her sister Cora was also a superb instrumentalist, and many of her cousins played and sang. Etta met Lee Baker, a piano player, at a square dance after a "corn shucking."
