Short Summary: In Yorkshire, at Holdernesse, a friar making his rounds, begging from householders, calls upon old Thomas, who is very ill. The wife tells him Thomas is grouchy, and the friar preaches a sermon on the evils of anger. Then he presses Thomas for a rich gift; Thomas says he has already given all he can, but the friar persists.
This tale follows the tale from the Friar in all manuscripts and is another of Geoffrey’s Canterbury Tales – a collection of short stories each recounted from the mouth of a pilgrim on the way to Saint Thomas Becket’s shrine in Canterbury Cathedral. Available also to view/download in PDF and DOCX.

The Summoner’s Tale is a fabliau: a comic story in verse with an everyday, middle-class setting, more concerned with folly than evil, in which the conman gets his come-uppance. The term Chaucer uses for the Miller’s fabliau, ‘cherles tale’, is echoed here in the ‘cherles dede’ (2206) on which the story hinges.
