History. Originally a duo, Stepdad was formed in Chicago, Illinois during the summer of 2009 when Mark Tafel and Ryan McCarthy, who were roommates at the time, began writing songs together in their apartment. They initially gained exposure in early 2010 when they composed a theme song for the popular web comic "Axe Cop". [1]
Stepdad started when Mark "Ultramark" Tafel was attending Central Michigan University and performed solo shows. He was contacted via MySpace by Ryan McCarthy, who had seen him perform. The two moved to Chicago together and began performing under the Stepdad moniker. Eventually, the duo moved to Grand Rapids in an effort to save money,Tafel said.

That's not to say Stepdad makes chiptune music, because they don't by any means. Rather, they just know how pop music works, and how computerized sounds can really enhance it. "NES games sparked my love for computer music production as a child,"S tepdad frontman Mark "ultramark" Tafel told us.
The group consists of Mark "ultramark" Tafel, Ryan McCarthy, Nathan K., and Ben Weissenborn Their sound has been described as "8-bit power pop". They have performed on the Van's Warped Tour (2012), have shared the stage with bands such as Passion Pit, Capital Cities, JR JR, and more.
