Prima la morte di Guglielmo IV (1852-1912), figlio di Adolfo (1817-1905), ultimo duca di Nassau, obbliga il Paese a rinunciare alla legge salica e a prevedere una successione femminile: la prima granduchessa del Lussemburgo diventa allora Maria Adelaide di Nassau (1894-1924), figlia di Guglielmo.
