The Secret of Life is the debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Gretchen Peters. It was released in 1996, and featured a minor hit single in the track, "When You Are Old". The song reached number 68 on the Hot Country Songs chart. The album was the first release for Imprint Records.

Since then, he has racked up almost thirty studio and live albums under his own name or in collaboration with others. I have, as far as I’m aware, every one of those albums.

Gretchen Peters belts out songs with a full, honeyed voice, and these arrangements of her songs seem influenced by other good Nashville singer-songwriters such as Steve Earle and Mary Chapin Carpenter. But make no mistake, Peters is an original.
