It was originally founded as a school for the U.S. Corps of Engineers with a class of 5 officers and 10 cadets on March 16, 1802. It is one of the oldest service academies in the world.
The most popular of the majors are foreign languages, management information systems, history, economics, and mechanical engineering. How a student/cadet is ranked is dependent on a three-way split between academic performance, military leadership performance and physical fitness, and in that order.
