6 feb 2022 · Hans Cranach morì nel 1537 a Bologna, durante un viaggio in Italia. Le poche notizie sul pittore, così prematuramente scomparso, le dobbiamo all’ode funebre composta dall’amico Johan Strigel, dalla quale apprendiamo anche che l’artista era versato soprattutto negli studi umanistici.
Hans Cranach died in Bologna on 9 October 1537, and it is not known whether this was his last intended destination or whether his trip would have continued. On his death the humanist and poet Johann Stigel wrote a long poem in praise of his skills as a painter.
Hans Cranach here depicts an episode from the life of Hercules, who according to Greek legend murdered his friend Iphitus in a struggle for power and who was thus punished by Hermes, who sold him to the court of Queen Omphale where he had to remain as a slave for three years.
His early paintings are difficult to distinguish from those of his father, whose polished style he perpetuated, and those of his elder brother, Hans Cranach (c. 1513-37). His woodcuts consist mainly of portraits and of religious subjects of a Protestant nature.
