In late 1980s, Lan Yu ( Liu Ye ), a poor architecture student from northern China, desperately needs money. He meets an acquaintance, Li Zheng (Li Huatong), who persuades Lan engage in prostitution. Naively, Lan agreed. He is introduced by Li to a successful businessman, Chen Handong ( Hu Jun ).
Based on a novel first published online by one "Beijing Comrade" in 1998, LAN YU is a breakthrough film, a queer drama set against the backdrop of the student movement that culminated in the Tiananmen Square Massacre.
