Bretton Hall College of Education was a higher education college in West Bretton in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England. It opened as a teacher training college in 1949 with awards from the University of Leeds. The college merged with the University of Leeds in 2001 and the campus closed in 2007.
Bretton Hall College was founded in 1947 by Sir Alec Clegg, Chief Education Officer of the West Riding of Yorkshire County Council. It first began as a training college for teachers of music, art and drama with courses awarded by the University of Leeds.
26 set 2020 · In 1946, the educationalist Alec Clegg, Chief Education Officer at the county council, asked the Ministry of Education to approve a new college. Originally, it was thought up as “a training college for men with a musical bias”, but its remit expanded to become a teacher training college for Art, Drama and Music.

The editors and Quacks Books of York are pleased to announce the publication of a new book of retrospective essays about Bretton Hall College, Wakefield. The college was established to provide post-war teacher-training in 1949, by Sir Alec Clegg, the Chief Education Officer for the West Riding County Council from 1945–1974.
By the mid 20th century, the hall’s days as a home were over. Sir Alec Clegg, Chief Education Officer for the West Riding, oversaw the creation of the college at Bretton Hall in 1949. He helped establish the area as a pioneering and innovative place for education.
The College of Bretton Hall was founded as a Training College for Teachers by the West Riding Education Authority in 1949 at the suggestion of the Ministry of Education. Bretton Hall, bought by the Authority for use as a College, was built between 1700 and 1750, and was formerly one of the country homes of Lord Allendale.
