Sechenov’s history begins in 1758 as the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial Moscow University. The university takes its name from 19th-century scientist Ivan Sechenov, a physiologist who laid the foundations for the study of reflexes, animal and human behavior, as well as neuroscience.
Sechenov University is the first and the oldest medical school in Russia tracing its history from the medical faculty of Moscow Imperial University founded in 1758.
Moscow State University was established in 1755 on the initiative of acclaimed intellectual and polymath Mikhail Lomonosov, and was known as the Imperial Moscow University until 1917. At the time of opening it consisted of three faculties – philosophy, law, and medicine – and was attended by 100 students.
