On 22 May 2001, Björk premiered six songs off the new album in an intimate concert at the Riverside Church in New York City, accompanied by Matmos and Zeena Parkins. Vespertine was released on 27 August, as a double 12" record, CD and compact cassette.

Released in 2001, Vespertine is the sound of Björk in love. It was written and recorded as the singer was tumbling head-first into a relationship with her future long-term partner, the conceptual artist Matthew Barney. Along the way, she found the shimmering sonic treasures of Vespertine.
