Born and raised in a wealthy textile mill-owning family in Spartanburg, as a child she reportedly was sent home from Pine Street School one day for singing Elvis Presley’s “Too Much” too loudly in the hallway. After high school, she left for Nashville and Vanderbilt University.

  6. Marshall wrote her first song in 1973 and has been writing ever since. In 1987, she received a citation of achievement from BMI for “Betty’s Bein’ Bad.” That same year, “Betty” was a finalist for “Country/Rock Song of the Year” at the Music City News National Songwriter Awards.
